Cycling champion trains Keighley kids

30 May 2018
school children at cycling event in Keighley, winning group of school children displaying medals

Local children got the chance to try out competitive cycling with a former national Cyclo Cross champion and professional cycling coach last week at the third annual interschools cycling event at University Academy Keighley.

The event on 23 May, organised by our Bradford schools officer with the University Academy Keighley (UAK), involved children from seven Keighley Primary schools from The Keighley Schools Partnership, and was supported by British Cycling coach and former National Cyclo Cross Champion Chris Young. It is part of a programme to tackle obesity and inactivity with schools in the Bradford area.

Each school had six children (three boys and three girls) taking part in an individual Time Trial, a sprint, relay, handicapped and endurance races. Last year’s winners Parkwood competed against St. Andrews, Victoria, Riddesden St. Mary’s, Eastwood, Our Lady of Victories and Holycroft.

Chris Young and local cycle club Bronte Tykes ran cycle coaching and training in between events.

All races took place on UAK’s Olympic standard athletics running track. UAK hosted the event and 10 UAK Year 10 students acted as ‘event makers’ marshalling the event and supporting the individual primary schools.

Many of the children riding in the event will move on to UAK when they leave their primary schools so the event was also an opportunity to see the facilities of their next potential school.

Oliver Barnes Inclusion Manager St. Andrews Primary School said:

“The Keighley Schools Partnership really appreciates the time and energy that Sustrans, British Cycling and UAK dedicates to our local schools. The interschools cycling event is well organised and our children really look forward to competing in it. Having worked in Keighley schools for over 10 years we are now seeing the benefit of Sustrans’ work that  inspires our children to ride and live a healthy lifestyle.”

It was a very close team competition with the top three schools exchanging places after each discipline. The final five- lap endurance race proved to be the decider, with overall victory and the trophy going to Riddlesden St Mary, Silver medal to Our Lady of Victories and Bronze to Holycroft.

Ian Cullen Event Organiser and our Active Travel Officer for Bradford and Keighley said:

“From this experience many of the children will now have the enthusiasm to progress on to local cycling clubs and to make cycling a regular part of their active lifestyle”.

Sustrans Statement: Chester Greenway

25 May 2018
,

Chicanes on the Chester Greenway. Why have these been installed?

Over the last year, there have been accidents on the Chester Greenway where people cycling have collided with pedestrians, including children, resulting in injury requiring hospital treatment.

For a week in February we used speed guns on the route and found that the average cycling speed was 16 miles per hour, with many people cycling over 20 miles per hour.

This is a popular path used by people of all abilities, including many local school children and elderly people. Sustrans policy is that anyone who uses our greenway must share the path with care. We have installed signs to urge people to consider other users and have held a number of public engagement events.

While the majority of people on bikes are courteous there are a small but significant number who continue to travel at high speed and do not alert other path users that they are approaching.

After considerable local pressure, Sustrans has agreed to trial accessible chicanes to help tackle this problem and we will be monitoring speeds along the path to check whether they are effective. The chicanes are designed so that people can slow down and freewheel round without getting off their bikes. They are accessible for all users, including wheelchairs, buggies, adapted bicycles and horses.

They are part of a range of measures we are testing with Cheshire West and Chester Council to help encourage everyone to share, respect and enjoy the path and to create a safe and pleasant environment.

Levels of pupils cycling to school in Scotland continue to increase

24 May 2018

The recorded levels of pupils cycling to school each year have reached their highest ever, according to research released by Sustrans Scotland.

The findings form part of the annual 2017 Hands Up Scotland Survey, an Official Statistic in Scotland. Funded by Transport Scotland, the survey was carried out by Sustrans Scotland in partnership with all 32 Scottish local authorities.   A total of 3.7% of school pupils said they cycled to school in 2017, up from 2.8% in 2010. The increase was highest in secondary schools, which marked a 0.4 percentage point increase in cycling levels over the past year (from 0.9% in 2016, to 1.3% in 2017).    Now in its 10th year, the Hands Up Scotland Survey, which asks children how they normally travel to school, also registered the highest ever number of participants - 515,005, across nursery, primary, secondary, independent and special educational needs (SEN) schools.    Active travel is still the most frequently reported mode of travelling to school in Scotland. Of the 48.8% of pupils who said they normally get to school in an active way, 3.7% said they used their bikes and 2.8% said they arrived on scooter, or skated to school. A further 42.3% said they walked to school, a decrease from 2016.    16.5% of pupils said they normally travelled by bus, and 24.5% said they travelled by car or taxi (22.8% and 1.6% respectively). 9.7% said they travelled via park and stride.    Commenting on the findings, Sustrans Scotland’s National Director John Lauder said: “We want to thank all the schools who took part in the 2017 Hands Up Scotland Survey.   “The survey is crucial in helping local authorities and partners to build a more accurate picture of how Scotland’s children travel to and from school, and helps to pin-point areas where more work can be done.   “The Hands Up Scotland Survey is an especially valuable tool for local authorities and partners giving them the opportunity to see school travel data at a regional level which can help support their work in the area.    “It is particularly encouraging to see a continued rise in the number of pupils cycling to school each day. Research has shown that increased physical activity can help us lead healthier – and happier – lives. By encouraging young people to travel actively for their journey to school, we can ensure Scotland’s children develop healthier travel habits that will be continued later in life.”   Earlier this week, Sustrans announced the launch of their Safer Routes to School fund. Funded by the Scottish Government and delivered by Sustrans Scotland, the fund aims to transform the school run into a safe, attractive and healthy option for pupils and parents who want to travel actively.   Projects aimed at tackling dangerous driving practices around school, creating priority crossings or increasing safety at school entrances through child-friendly placemaking are also encouraged to apply.

Small village school defies odds to win Big Pedal

24 May 2018
Teacher and pupils celebrate Big Pedal win, Pupils cycling in playground

A Co Down school has seen off stiff competition from across the UK to win overall first place in its category in the Big Pedal Competition.

Pupils from Christ The King Primary, near the rural village of Drumaness pedalled and scooted their way to overall 1st place, beating schools from across the UK. The school achieved an outstanding daily average of 100% of pupils travelling to school by bike or scooter.

Organised by Sustrans, and sponsored by Micro Scooters and Tonik, the Big Pedal, which took place from 23 April to 4 May, is the largest inter-school competition of its kind in the UK.

“ I loved coming to school on my bike, I felt wide awake and had lots of fun cycling with my friends. ”

- Eimar, pupil at Christ The King

Emma Keenan, Sustrans Active School Travel Manager in Northern Ireland, praised Christ The King Primary’s tremendous achievement.

“Taking first place in the Big Pedal is an impressive result but even more so given the lack of safe infrastructure to enable pupils to cycle or walk,” she said. “Christ The King have certainly defied the odds.”

There are just 104 pupils at the school which is on a quiet, narrow road but children have to cross a very busy commuter route from the village to get to school. There used to be a lollipop patrol person on the main road but this is no longer the case, and there are no crossing facilities which would enable more children to safely walk, scoot or cycle the journey.

Northern Ireland schools win top three places

The top three winners in the Small Schools category were all from rural Northern Ireland, making it the region’s most successful year in the Big Pedal. A record 146 schools across Northern Ireland registered to take part in The Big Pedal, which has been running since 2010.

In very close second place was Killylea Primary in Armagh* and St Mary’s Primary, Killyleagh, Co Down took the third spot. A Belfast school, St Kieran’s Primary also came in third place in the Large Primary Schools category with nearly 80% travelling by bike or scooter.

The 10-day challenge across the UK saw pupils, parents and staff leave the cars at home with nearly one million journeys being made by bike or scooter.

“ We saw a massive improvement in the children’s concentration and focus on the days they had cycled or scooted to school. ”

- Lindsey Upritchard, Schoolteacher, Christ The King Primary

School Principal, Grainne Fay was delighted at the school’s success. She said: “Here in Christ the King we have fantastic support from the whole school community and this was no different during the Big Pedal.

“Families joined in with the competition by also making the journey to school by bike or scooter and this gave the pupils a great confidence boost, and helped us win! There was a real buzz in the school during the two weeks of the challenge and pupils, families and staff all had great fun being active on their way to school.”

Above all the pupils enjoyed the competition. Primary 4 pupil Eimar said: “I loved coming to school on my bike, I felt wide awake and had lots of fun cycling with my friends.”

Teacher Lindsey Upritchard described how the active travel journeys to school paid dividends in the classroom.

“As teachers we saw a massive improvement in the children’s concentration and focus on the days they had cycled or scooted to school,” she said. “Every day in school we do the Daily Mile, and during the Big Pedal we all did our Daily Mile on our bikes and scooters instead of walking and the boys and girls absolutely loved this. They really enjoyed the challenge and are delighted to have done so well.”

Killylea Primary School in Armagh also achieved 100% participation but was pipped to the post by Christ The King which had more supporter journeys (parents, relatives cycling/scooting)

Top stats from this year’s Big Pedal

Across the UK

almost 2.4 million miles cycled or scooted across the UK – equal to 96 trips around the world almost 576 tonnes of CO2 not emitted across the UK

In Northern Ireland

over 116,900 car journeys were avoided, saving £24,000 in fuel costs exactly 42 tonnes of CO2 were not emitted over 3.4 million calories burned More information about the Big Pedal results Read more about our work in schools in Northern Ireland

Big Pedal success in Leicester

24 May 2018
Maryam Amatullah with year 4 children taking shelter from the rain during a fun cycling session!

Schools across the country have been taking part in the Big Pedal, our event aimed at getting more young people cycling and scooting to school. In Leicester 18 schools registered to take part in the challenge which took place between 23rd April and 4th May with promising results.

One of the schools which took part was Mellor Community Primary school. During the Big Pedal we recorded 1,238 journeys made by bicycle or scooter with 38.83% of pupils taking part. Overall, the school achieved an overall finish of 111th place nationally.

During the challenge, our team helped to deliver a range of activities for pupils and parents. This included a visit by the local PCSO team to do some bike marking and a maintenance workshop for parents. The activities received the backing of parents with one, who plans to continue cycling with his son, noting improvements in their child’s behaviour.

Work within Mellor is funded by the Choose How You Move Leicester City Council Access Fund and is part of the school run parking programme to reduce congestion at school run times.

Speaking about the success of the Big Pedal at the school Maryam Amatullah, our local Schools Cycling Officer, said:

“Mellor Community Primary has been absolutely amazing during the Big Pedal!! The whole school was buzzing with excitement and we couldn’t believe how many bikes and scooters we were seeing.

“At the start of the project bike counts were around 2 – 4 but on one day a whopping 272 bikes were recorded! Even the rain didn’t stop the children from riding their bikes and scooters to school! Also, I’d also like to thank our school champion at the school, Antony Hibble who got behind the Big Pedal straightaway and pushed the whole school to take part.

"He said children are continuing to ride and scoot even after the Big Pedal. I wish all my champions had Antony’s positive attitude and drive!”

Felled tree becomes a work of art

24 May 2018
hedgehog wooden sculpture, owl wooden sculpture, owl and hare carved out of wood

An award-winning chainsaw artist has transformed the remains of a large tree into a wildlife-themed artwork on our popular Sea to Sea (C2C) cycle route in Stanley, Co. Durham.

We commissioned the carvings of a hare, hedgehog and owls by Consett-based chainsaw artist Tommy Craggs after a rotting willow tree was felled along the popular path.

Danny Morris, our Greener Greenways Senior Project Officer for the North of England said: “We were sad to hear that this tree had to be removed and we thought that we should leave something special in its place which shows the wildlife which can be seen in the area. Having seen Tommy’s work elsewhere around the North East we thought it was the perfect opportunity to bring him in to create something spectacular which will benefit route-users and the local community”.

We manage the Consett to Sunderland section of the C2C, a 140 mile challenge route which attracts over 15,000 people each year and is part of the National Cycle Network. The Sustrans team identified the large willow as being unsafe during a tree inspection and tree surgeons were brought in to prevent it from causing any accidents in the future.

Gina Clarke, our North East Land Manager said: “We really don’t like to take down mature trees along our routes but unfortunately this one was rotting at the base and left to its own devices it could have caused an accident in years to come as the large branches were overhanging the track as well as a residential property”.

We would like to get users of the route involved in naming the carving. To suggest a name you’ll need to visit the artwork and scan a QR code which will allow you to email your suggestion – you’ll also need to send a picture of yourself next to one of the four animals you’d like to name. The winner will have their suggested name and their own name inscribed on plaques which will be displayed beneath each creature.

With the help of volunteers we will also look to improve the area for people and wildlife by installing benches and sowing wildflower seeds by the new artwork.

The Consett to Sunderland section of the C2C is part of a network across England and Wales of over 400km of traffic-free paths managed for wildlife in the Greener Greenways project, funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.

You can visit Tommy Craggs’ chainsaw carvings on the C2C path at Charnwood, Barnhill, Stanley, County Durham.

If you would like to get involved in the Greener Greenways project email volunteers-north@sustrans.org.uk

Sustrans responds to the Government’s Clean Air Strategy

Responding to the publication of the Government’s draft Clean Air Strategy, Xavier Brice, CEO for Sustrans said:

“We welcome the more holistic approach presented in the Clean Air Strategy to address all sources of particulate pollution. However, the Government isn’t doing enough to tackle poor air quality from motor vehicles, which account for 80% of the pollution where legal limits are broken.

“The strategy, in particular, seems vague on solutions to tackle the problem of the pollution from braking and tyre systems.

“It is clear we need fewer not just newer vehicles on our roads.

“We want the UK Government to take meaningful action on road transport emissions by investing in high-quality cycling and walking infrastructure which allows families to cycle and walk to school and amenities with confidence so that it is the most obvious choice for shorter journeys.”
