Red squirrels travel on Cumbria cycle route

31 October 2017
Red squirrel with white tail eats on a feeder

A group of red squirrels has been spotted using an off-road section of the popular long distance Sea to Sea (C2C) path which we maintain.

Our volunteers regularly see four red squirrels (1 female, 3 males) at a feeding and monitoring station in Seaton to Broughton moor section, on the former iron ore railway line. They were a few miles away from their local stronghold in Broughton, which the team says is a clear sign the animals are using the linear path to travel between feeding grounds.

The 16 miles of cycle path runs between Whitehaven to Rowrah and Workington to Seaton, Siddick and Broughton Moor, and is known locally as Tracks of the Ironmasters, because it once hauled iron ore to local mines. The path is owned and managed by us and is now part of a project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to restore the natural, social and industrial heritage of the area.

The red squirrels are often spotted at the route’s new feeders, which were constructed by Sustrans apprentices, and we are appealing for people to name the most regular feeder visitor – a male squirrel with a distinctive white tail (pictured).

We work with the West Lakes Red Squirrel Initiative, which monitors the feeder and sitings, and reports to a red squirrel data base across the North.

Sustrans Project Officer Nikki Wingfield said:

“This is clear evidence that red squirrels are using the cycle and walking route to move away from their stronghold in Broughton. It is exciting as it means the path is acting as an important highway to link up isolated squirrel habitats.

“In the past we’d had reports that there were red squirrels on the cycle path and it’s brilliant we can now confirm that we are actively part of protecting red squirrels across the whole of the north of England. We really need to help protect red squirrels from the greys in this area so if you do spot a grey squirrel in this area please contact the West Lakes Squirrel Initiative.”

Grey squirrels are a carrier of the highly contagious squirrel pox virus. Whereas greys have developed immunity, all infected red squirrels die, generally within 15 days, so contact with infected greys could decimate the population.

We work with local volunteers to manage the old track for wildlife, including tree and wildflower planting, raking to encourage wildflowers along the path and restoring habitats such as small wetland areas, heathland and hedgerow habitats.

In May 2016 we won a £859,300 from HLF to preserve and improve access to the rich historic and natural heritage of the path, which is linked to former iron ore mines at Knockmurton and Kelton and ironworks at Workington, Cleator and Distington. It includes a number of historic bridges and remnants of the path’s past, such as a rock crusher and railway signal.

The C2C route attracts around 15,000 cyclists every year for the challenging 140 mile long distance ride between Whitehaven and Sunderland.

Red Carpet for Broadway cycle route

31 October 2017
Cyclist on a bicycle path, Award winners at the CIHT North East and Cumbria Annual award ceremony

North Tyneside’s new cycle tracks have won a prestigious award from the Chartered Institute of Highways & Transportation (CIHT).

The Broadway cycling and walking improvements scheme in Tynemouth, which was delivered by North Tyneside Council through its technical services partner Capita, won the Sustainable Transport Project award for 2017 at the CIHT NE & Cumbria Dinner this month in Newcastle, presented by CIHT President Andreas Markides.

The route, which also features a number of raised junctions to assist pedestrians,  was designed and installed by Capita, with support from Sustrans North East’s Design team.

The CIHT North East and Cumbria Annual Awards celebrate the very best projects and people working in the region across the highways and transportation sector. The Sustainable Project Award is awarded to those projects, products, research or policy initiatives delivered by the highways and transportation sector, that demonstrate a positive contribution to sustainable working and living in the North East & Cumbria, or by those working in the region.

Cllr John Harrison, North Tyneside Council’s cabinet member for Housing and Transport, said:

“We are delighted that the Broadway cycling and walking improvements scheme has been chosen for this award.

“We want to make it easier for people to cycle and walk to school, to work and to the shops as a healthy and sustainable way of getting around.

“Cycling in North Tyneside has trebled in 10 years and in our new Transport Strategy we commit to encouraging a shift to more sustainable modes of transport by giving them greater priority in design.”

David Wall, Associate Director for Capita’s Real Estate and Infrastructure division, said:

“This award is excellent recognition for all those involved in the project.

“More people in North Tyneside are cycling and a contributory factor is the borough’s extensive network of public rights of way and of traffic-free paths.

“Capita is committed to helping North Tyneside Council and its partners further improve cycling infrastructure and create a real network of cycle/walking routes connecting North Tyneside with the region and beyond.”

A survey in early summer 2017 showed that the Broadway cycle tracks were used for more than 150 cycling trips per day.

The 1.8 metre wide cycle tracks, which are around 400m long, separate people on bikes from vehicles on a busy section of the A193 Broadway, which has no residential service roads and previously had no dedicated cycling infrastructure.  They connect Tynemouth Village to the Coast Road corridor and provide a link in journeys to the Metro station and local schools.

Senior Engineer, Tim Pheby, who accepted the award on behalf of Sustrans, said:

“It’s fantastic to get recognition for this scheme, which has the potential to change how people travel locally. By helping creating well-designed walking and cycle routes we hope more people will choose transport options which are healthier for them and the environment.”

Cycle track users have priority over traffic at side roads, as the give way lines have been set back on the speed table crossings - the raised tables also make it easier to cross side roads on foot. At bus stops, the cycle track bypasses the shelters, enabling riders to carry on their journey without being held up by a bus or mixing with traffic when overtaking one.

The cycling and walking improvements scheme was part of the Department for Transport’s Cycle Safety Fund programme, aimed at making busy roads and junctions safer for people of all ages to cycle. This fund was administered by Sustrans.

School in north Wales tackling the sedentary lifestyle “epidemic”

30 October 2017
students at Ysgol Llywelyn in Denbighshire

Ysgol Llywelyn in Denbighshire has increased the number of pupils choosing an active journey to school by 16%, resulting in over a half of the school community cycling, scooting and walking to school.

The school is one of 90 schools across Wales to sign up to Sustrans Cymru’s Active Journeys programme. They have fully embraced the scheme, encouraging pupils to exercise on the journey to and from school, raising levels of physical activity across the school community.

Two new storage sheds for bikes have been installed (thanks to funding from the local council and the school) along with pedestrian access with a through route from the car park to the main entrance.  A ‘Park and Stride’ initiative was set up, encouraging parents to park at the Football Club so that pupils could walk the last 10 minutes to school.

Pupils were also awarded house points for travelling actively to school. Two members of staff have been trained as ride leaders by Welsh Cycling and a section of the yard has been cordoned off for pupils to use to practice cycling and scooting during playtime.

Headteacher, Mari Gaskell, said:

“We’re thrilled to see more of our pupils travelling to school by bike, scooter and on foot. It’s an excellent way for young people to increase their daily physical activity levels and they arrive at school alert and ready to take on the day. We hope to see this continue to grow in order to reduce traffic at the school gates, creating a safer environment for us all.”

Sustrans’ North Wales Schools Officer said:

“Ysgol Llywelyn has introduced several initiatives to give families lots of options to travel actively to school.  From providing bike parking and better pedestrian access and promoting ‘park and stride’ they’ve really changed the culture at the school, helping pupils to introduce a healthy activity into their everyday routines.”

Ann Jones Assembly Member, Vale of Clwyd said:

“It’s wonderful to see pupils choosing to travel actively to Ysgol Llywelyn. This shows that interventions such as ‘Park and Stride’, bike parking facilities and support from school staff has a great influence on the lifestyle choices of the pupils. I hope to see more achievements like this across the Vale of Clwyd.”

Sustrans lays groundwork for ambitious Cycle Superhighway 9

27 October 2017
Artist's impression of Dukes Avenue. Image credit: TfL, Cyclist on Londons Cycle Superhighway 6

Transport for London (TfL) hope to start construction of London’s most ambitious Cycle Super Highway, CS9 in late 2018, following a period of consultation that ended on 31 Oct 2017. TfL’s vision for CS9, a vital part of London’s transport strategy, has been brought to life by Sustrans, through expert street design, community engagement and project management.

Sustrans has worked closely with TfL, and delivery partners at the London Borough of Hounslow, the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham to lay the groundwork for this new route for Londoners.

The proposed CS9 is a 5.6 miles long segregated cycle path, running from Kensington Olympia to Brentford town centre and represents a significant investment in local infrastructure that will widen travel choices for people in West London.

The route will encourage more people to cycle via a two-way segregated cycle track on Hammersmith Road, King Street and Chiswick High Road.

“ It’s been fantastic to have played a key role to help deliver this large and complex cycle superhighway scheme, one of the most challenging highway schemes Sustrans has ever been involved in, anywhere in the UK. ”

- Sustrans Director for London Matt Winfield

The proposals include five new and twenty upgraded signal controlled crossings to benefit people walking. Access to the South Circular from Wellesley Road and Stile Hall Gardens will be restricted for motor vehicles to improve access for residents, make it easier for people on foot to cross these roads and significantly improve conditions for people on bikes.

Sustrans Director for London Matt Winfield:
“It’s been fantastic to have played a key role to help deliver this large and complex cycle superhighway scheme, one of the most challenging highway schemes Sustrans has ever been involved in, anywhere in the UK. It’s going to make a huge difference to the lives of people living and traveling in West London.”

What was our role?

A wide range of our skills sets and expertise were brought into play behind the scenes on CS9 including but not limited to: infrastructure design, community engagement, project management, traffic modelling and the commission and analysis of surveys (pedestrian, parking, retail, traffic counts).

Our work was grounded in the local community, we wanted to devise a scheme that local people would really want.

Through close working with TfL and the London Boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham and Hounslow, the project team worked through a number of different design options for sections of the route, testing out different scenarios with key stakeholders to see which would be the best fit for the area.

The final designs presented in the consultation are a result of this hard work and we are confident that the tracks proposed will help to make this once unwelcoming environment an attractive option for cyclists and pedestrians, transforming the way people travel to and through the area.

Through engaging with the community, the project team learned that 73% of residents on the Wellesley Road (Hounslow) felt there was too much non-residential traffic, with most residents (55%) wanting restricted vehicle access to the South Circular. This led to a proposal to restrict vehicle access on Wellesley Road, designed to reduce through traffic at peak times to the South Circular. Our award-winning Collaborative Design team were heavily involved in the consultation process that led to the road closure proposal.

The improvements that will be delivered as part of CS9 will make the streets healthier and safer streets for all.

A walking and cycling future

West London currently suffers from some of the most dangerous roads in London, and has a lack of safe infrastructure for people cycling and people walking. CS9 will start to change this. And we’re very proud of it.

CS9 is an example of how Sustrans can lay the groundwork to deliver major schemes that bring to life community-led, aspirational and complex urban cycling and walking schemes. This is what we are doing all over the UK.

Sustrans worked with TfL, London Borough of Hounslow and Hammersmith and Fulham, GLA, volunteers, and residents on this ambitious project.

Schools encouraged to spend School Sport Premium to enable children to walk and cycle to school

24 October 2017
child cycling

Today the Government has released its guidance to schools on the doubled School Sport Premium in England with an additional £160 million per year for schools to spend on increasing physical activity.

In addition to doubling the funding that primary schools receive to improve the quality of their PE and sport provision from £160 million to £320 million a year, the Department for Education have published details of the individual allocations at school level and funding guidance for this scheme

One of the ways a school can choose to spend the premium is to “embed physical activity into the school day through active travel to and from school, active playgrounds and active teaching”.

Commenting on the announcement, Xavier Brice, Chief Executive of Sustrans, walking and cycling charity said:

“We welcome the doubling of the School Sport Premium and call on schools to use the additional funding to enable more children to walk, cycle or scoot on their journey to school.

“Walking and cycling is an ideal way to keep young people active and helps them get their recommended hour of physical activity a day to maintain a healthy weight.  Children who actively travel to school are also found to be more awake and ready to learn.

“Improving school sports is essential but not all children enjoy competitive sport. At the time when a third of our children are overweight and obese, it’s important we help them build more physical activity into their daily routine, and walking and cycling to school can do just that”

Sustrans has delivered active travel programmes with more than 2000 schools across the UK building children’s confidence to ride a bike, walk and scoot to school.
