Active Travel Challenge motivates more commuters out of their cars in Belfast

29 June 2018
Awards presentation with bike, Group of people with awards

More than a thousand people from a wide range of workplaces in Belfast caught the active travel bug in May – and walked, cycled or hopped on the train or bus.

Private, public and voluntary sector organisations went head to head in the Active Travel Challenge, organised by Sustrans and funded by the Public Health Agency (PHA), to encourage workers out of their car and travelling sustainably.

Belfast Lord Mayor, Deirdre Hargey congratulated the winners and all those who took part in an awards ceremony this week at PLACE offices in the city centre.

Almost 14,000 journeys were made by participants during May, the vast majority of which were undertaken on foot or by bicycle.

The Department for Infrastructure were active travel champions in the largest workplace category, while MCR Consulting, Belfast won in the smallest workplace category.

Civil servant Lynda Hurley from DfI took first place on the individual leaderboard and prizes went to a wide range of workplaces including Seaview Primary School in north Belfast.

“ The Active Travel Challenge’s success has shown how more people are continuing to embrace active travel as part of their daily lives. ”

- David Tumilty, Public Health Agency

The workplaces that topped the Active Travel leaderboard were:

Small Workplace winner (3-20 employees) MCR Consulting Ltd, Belfast Workplace winner (21-90 employees) Seaview Primary School, Belfast Workplace winner (91-249 employees) The Odyssey Trust Workplace winner (250-499 employees) AECOM Workplace winner (500 -1000 employees) Concentrix Largest Workplace winner (1001+ employees) Department for Infrastructure

Over 40 workplaces registered for the Challenge with a total of 1,032 people registered, 69% of whom actively participated. The Active Travel Challenge is just one part of a wider PHA-funded project called Leading the Way with Active Travel, that is engaging with staff in some of Belfast’s largest workplaces to encourage and facilitate active travel.

David Tumilty, Senior Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement Manager at the PHA, said: “Congratulations to all who took part in the Active Travel Challenge. Its success has shown how more people are continuing to embrace active travel as part of their daily lives. It offers great examples of how easy it can be to fit walking, cycling and public transport in to the working day and enjoy the health benefits of doing so.

Sustrans Active Travel Officer, Patricia Magee said: “On average, we each burned the equivalent of 3,400 calories during the month of May - or just over a day’s worth of calories – just by changing the way we travel. I’m personally delighted with the uptake this year and aim to double this next year.”

Grainne McMacken from Belfast Health Development Unit in Belfast City Council has enjoyed taking part in the Challenge in recent years.

“The challenge makes me think again before I take the car out,” she said. “This time I used it to really challenge myself to cycle some slightly longer journeys. One day I cycled to the dentist 3 miles away. It really took the stress out of my appointment! I also deliberately car shared where I could which gave me a great opportunity to catch up with a friend I’d not seen for a while.”

Ban on pavement parking amongst measures recommended by new alliance of the UK’s leading walking and cycling organisations

28 June 2018
man cycling by bridge

A ban on pavement parking, high quality cycling infrastructure, a 20mph limit on local streets and an overhaul of the Highway Code are amongst measures recommended today (Thursday, June 28) in a new manifesto from an alliance of the UK’s major organisations dedicated to walking and cycling.

The alliance of the Bicycle Association, Cycling UK, the Ramblers, British Cycling, Living Streets and Sustrans, has a combined membership of more than 330,000 people and span every form of walking and cycling, from the school run to Olympic success.

Launching their ‘Moving the Nation’ manifesto at a major conference on cycling in Manchester today, they unveiled a new vision of a future where everybody in the UK can live, work and play in places that are ‘healthy, vibrant and that make walking and cycling the natural choice for short journeys’.

The alliance has outlined the five first steps it would like to see the Government take on board to realise their vision:

Speed

Lower default speed limits to 20mph for most roads in built up areas and 40mph for the most minor rural roads to make our roads and streets safer for everyone.

Space

Adopt and ensure consistent application of existing ‘best-in-class’ infrastructure design standards to create safe, attractive and inviting places for people of all ages and abilities to walk and cycle.

Safety

Revise the Highway Code to improve safety for people walking and cycling, particularly at junctions.

Priority

Prohibit pavement parking to create safer and more accessible streets.

Culture

Provide cycle training for all children during their primary and secondary school years and embed a culture of walking and cycling throughout the school curriculum.

Speaking at the launch, the Chief Executive of Sustrans, Xavier Brice said:

“For too long now our towns and cities have been designed around cars and motor vehicles, leaving them unsafe, unattractive and difficult to move around on foot or by bike.

“Sustrans advocated for the Cycling and Investment Strategy, and with the launch of the manifesto, we want to ensure it is strengthened so that walking and cycling becomes the natural and realistic choice of transport for everyone, regardless of age, gender and ethnicity.

“Today, we are setting out a tangible vision of what good would look like and are calling on the UK Government to take urgent action, to unlock the incredible benefits in terms of health and economy which walking and cycling can deliver.”

Also speaking at the launch was Olympian Chris Boardman, who last year was appointed Greater Manchester’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner by Metro-Mayor Andy Burnham.

He said:

“Getting around on foot or by bike has a transformational effect on our local neighbourhoods but also on our collective health and wellbeing. In spite of this, consistently across several governments, we’ve seen a lack of leadership and far too little investment in new infrastructure to make it safe and easy to do.

“We’re making major changes across Greater Manchester but we’d like to see it happen everywhere and that needs national action, now, supported by government.”

Julie Harrington, Chief Executive of British Cycling, said:

“More people cycling and walking will reduce congestion, lower the costs of ill health on the NHS, and make our local communities safer and more pleasant places to be. The Government’s Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy is a step in the right direction but we need to do more.

“By speaking out for the first time with one voice, we have set out a clear vision for the future which will help our country become happier, healthier and greener.”

The vision set out in ‘Moving the Nation’ includes a number of areas of action, including: making walking and cycling the natural and easy choice for all short journeys; making sure every town and city is served by a core network of protected cycle routes and walking routes, particularly connecting people to green spaces; ensuring that every rail and bus stop has facilities that prioritise cycling and walking; making sure that every child is able to walk and cycle to school in safety and with confidence; and giving everybody an opportunity to take up walking and cycling, through programmes in schools, workplaces and local communities.

Aside from the five first steps outlined in ‘Moving the Nation’ the alliance is calling on the UK’s Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS) to be strengthened, alongside walking and cycling’s place in the planned new Road Investment Strategy (RIS2). It’s also calling for long-term dedicated investment, to reflect a Safety Review carried out as part of the CWIS, and backed by charging for pollution.

Reducing through traffic on Estreham Road with community support

27 June 2018
Sustrans trials a road closure in Lambeth

Estreham Road is now a quiet residential street, but that wasn’t always the case.

Between October 2016 and March 2017, we helped the London Borough of Lambeth to engage the local community to trial a scheme they hoped would significantly reduce through traffic on a residential road in Streatham. Dangerous levels of congestion were putting school children and other road users at risk every time they used the street.

Estreham Road forms part of Quietway 5 from Waterloo to Norbury. The funding from the Quietways programme provided the unique opportunity for people around Estreham Road to benefit from Transport for London investment.

Quietways are a network of high quality, well-signed cycle routes throughout London, mostly using quieter backstreets, parks and waterways. They link key destinations and will appeal to  people who want to use quieter, low-traffic routes for walking and cycling. Quietways work with, and complement other initiatives in London to help people get about under their own steam, such as the Cycle Superhighways.

Very high numbers of (non-residential) vehicles passed through each day, using the road to avoid a traffic signal at the junction of Greyhound Lane and Streatham High Road.

First Sustrans worked with the borough and local residents between June and December 2015 to identify existing transport problems and develop solutions that could enhance the area for those who lived on Estreham Road, as well as improving safety for more vulnerable road users, particularly people walking and cycling.

Three design proposals were developed, and feedback was sought from residents through online and postal surveys and public drop in sessions. The preferred design option, a northbound no entry point at the southern end of Estreham Road, was taken to public consultation in February 2016. After receiving 56% support at the consultation (compared to 37% who did not support the proposals), Lambeth took the decision to trial the proposal for six months.

A temporary trial provided the opportunity to understand how the changes would work in practice, and the impact on neighbourhood and local traffic flows. Lambeth monitored traffic throughout the trial before making the decision on the next steps. The successful trial took place between October 2016 and April 2017.

The trial was game changing for residents. Their support for the scheme rose from 40% to 60% as a result of the community engagement work and trial. Air quality improved as nitrogen dioxide levels fell. The number of vehicles using the road reduced by over 75%, falling from over 1600 a day to under 400.

Now people enjoy a more healthy and liveable Estreham Road, which also forms part of a great section of Quietway 5. By reducing the amount of motor traffic using Estreham Road, Lambeth has created a street environment which prioritises people over vehicles, making it a more pleasant place for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Our success in Lambeth is just the start of how we will work with boroughs and communities to create healthier streets and liveable neighbourhoods.

Kevin Potter, Managing Director, Cavendish Nursery School told us:

“At first we thought the closure would be a nightmare, but I have to say, it’s been just the opposite. The whole area is so much more peaceful, safe and pleasant. Our cars now stay at home and our children are getting fitter by cycling to school.

Months down the line, the Estreham Road Closure is continuing to make the area a much nicer place to be”.

It’s a pedaltastic result in Peterborough!

22 June 2018
School children and teachers celebrate

Schools in Peterborough are still celebrating the achievements they accomplished during this year’s UK wide Big Pedal which took place between 23 April-4 May. Sixteen schools across the city got involved however, St Thomas More Catholic Primary school has even more reason to celebrate their achievements than most!

They fended off tough competition from other local Sustrans Bike It Plus schools to finish top of the pile in Peterborough for the second year in a row! They also achieved an impressive 7th place finish nationally in the Sustrans Big Pedal large schools category. Incredibly, Orton Wistow Primary from Peterborough also made it into the top 20 places nationally out of 500 schools in the competition’s large schools category!

The Big Pedal is the largest competition of its kind in the UK. Backed by world record breaking cyclist Mark Beaumont, it’s all about encouraging children, teachers and parents to jump on their bikes and scooters and ditch the car.

The head teacher at St Thomas More is Anne-Marie McElhinney who was thrilled with the outcome. Commenting on the results she said:

“We are delighted to have won the Big Pedal in Peterborough again this year. Our whole community always gets behind us and rises to the challenge of cycling and scooting into school for the two weeks of the Big Pedal. At St Thomas More we are committed to improving the health and fitness of our children as well working together to reduce pollution in our local environment. The good news is that our bike sheds and scooter pods are still full one week later”.

The results from this year’s Big Pedal competition provides further evidence that years of investment to promote sustainable transport by Peterborough City Council are paying off. As part of their commitment to create the UK’s environment capital the local authority set up TravelChoice – an organisation created to reduce the need to travel by car.

Through this initiative we were commissioned to deliver the Bike It Plus scheme at a number of schools across the area. Last year the project reached a project milestone making its 70,000th engagement with pupils, teachers and families in Peterborough. With funding from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority secured our team are confident they’ll be able to go on reducing the number of children travelling to school by car.

Reflecting on this year’s competition our local Schools and Communities officer, Gemma Hughes, said:

“It is truly astonishing to have two Peterborough schools right up there in the top 20 national positions. It was wonderful to see both schools improving on last year’s scores - teachers, pupils and parents really got behind the competition this year and both schools nailed it! We’re very grateful to Peterborough City Council, and the Combined Authority, for their significant support. Without their vision we wouldn’t be seeing so many people coming out on their bikes and scooters, and with plenty of smiles – It’s a spectacular achievement!

Can we talk about Boulevard De Saint Brieuc?

Some people called out a tweet that we posted yesterday about new infrastructure in Aberystwyth.

Like you, we want to make Wales one of the best countries in Europe for walking and cycling. Whilst progress is being made, Wales still has a long way to go, and I share the impatience of many that we’re not there yet.

Part of our role in Wales is to champion best practice. That means praising local authorities when they’re making progress and calling out what we see as poor infrastructure.

This morning I told Assembly Members the way roads are maintained is dangerous for cyclists and needs to change.

Sometimes the difference between good and poor practice is obvious, sometimes it’s not. And sometimes we make a wrong call. We listen to and reflect on what people say, and we learn.

In terms of the scheme in question, was it an improvement to what was there before? Yes.

Could it have been better? Yes.

Should we have been less enthusiastic to praise it? Yes.

To make Wales better, we need to push the bar on what good infrastructure looks like. This more than ever now extra money is being invested in active travel in Wales.

I’ve read your Tweets, heard your views and that has helped us learn.

Thames Path 'missing link' is completed in Greenwich

21 June 2018
,

Earlier this week we celebrated the completion of a longstanding “missing link” on National Cycle Network Route 1 on the Thames Path in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

The fantastic new connection involved building an impressive cantilever structure alongside the Thames which takes people who are walking and cycling away from the busy Woolwich Road/A206 and onto the new path along the Thames. Journey times for people walking and cycling are cut too.

Our iconic National Cycle Network Route 1 is a long distance cycling route from Dover to the Shetland Islands going through the Royal Borough of Greenwich, often using the Thames Path. This section mostly runs alongside the river and is traffic-free for large parts.

There were small sections at Charlton where the path had to divert inland, known locally as the ‘Missing Link’.

The technically challenging improvements were funded by the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Transport for London (TfL) as part of their Quietways project, and involved blasting though a wall to open access to an industrial estate, negotiating permissions with landlords, and creating the new cantilever bridge alongside the Thames.

The new link, which is open from dawn to dusk, will form part of TfL’s Quietway 14 route (Q14) which will eventually run from Greenwich to Bexley.

New bridge over the Thames River Wall

The work involved building an elevated structure that sits atop the River Wall (and cantilevers over the river) linking King Henry’s Wharf to Warspite Road, providing a connection where there was previously none.

Opening up access

Improvements also involved securing and upgrading a safe route through the Westminster Industrial Estate (off Warspite Road) and the construction of a ramp from the estate into the Thames Barrier site.

Matt Winfield, London Director said:

“This year Sustrans are reviewing the National Cycle Network across the UK, so we’re delighted that this long-standing “missing link” in our iconic Route 1 is now complete, thanks to Quietways programme funding from Transport for London and investment from the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

All the fantastic work done here makes this important route better for everyone. From local people to long distance cyclists, the Thames riverside route is deservedly popular, passing some of London’s key landmarks including the Thames Barrier and the O2 Dome.“

Sizwe James, Cabinet Member for Transport, Economy and Smart Cities, said:

"We have the longest and, I think, the most beautiful waterfront of any of the London boroughs. And we are investing and working towards the time when walkers and cyclists will be able to travel from one end of the Borough to the other on the Thames Path without any in-land detour.”

The Thames path in Greenwich runs eight miles along the Thames, stretching from the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, past The O2 Arena, through employment heartlands and the Thames Barrier to the metropolitan centre of Woolwich and out to Thamesmead.

Sustrans is TfL’s delivery agent for Quietways, working with boroughs across London, including the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Transport for London on the Quietways programme, as part of the Mayor’s vision to transform London.
