Sustrans responds to British Social Attitudes Survey 2016: Public attitudes towards transport

30 August 2017

According to the British Social Attitudes Survey, conducted for government departments including the Department for Transport, there has been a big increase in the proportion of people who never or rarely travel short distances by car from 16% in 2015 to 21% in 2016.

The proportion of people willing to walk short journeys of less than 2 miles, rather than go by car, has increased to 44%. There has been a strong increase in recent years in the proportion of people who express strong willingness to make this change from 6% in 2006 to 14% in 2016.

Meanwhile, there has been a marked decrease in the proportion of people saying that they could not switch short journeys that they make by car to cycling trips, down to 25% in 2016 from 34% in 2015.

However, 59% of people perceive that roads are too dangerous to cycle on a record low since the survey begun (64% in 2015).

Commenting on the survey, Andy Cope, Director of Insight, Research & Monitoring Unit at Sustrans, walking and cycling charity said:

“The survey shows that people want to walk and cycle more, but that they need better places in which to do it.

“We are increasingly aware of the health and environmental benefits of travelling by bike and foot and this awareness is reflected in changing attitudes. This is particularly noticeable in the proportion of people who are expressing a strong willingness to make a change to their patterns of everyday travel.

“The extent of demand for safe and pleasant walking and cycling routes is clear.

“It is essential we find ways to encourage more people to walk and cycle if we are to make the most of the associated benefits. The Government must prioritise development of traffic free routes as well as improving local roads and streets, and designing and maintaining them to be safe and pleasant for everyone to cycle, walk and play.”

Scotland’s National Walking and Cycling Network helps increase physical activity say nearly 80% of users

30 August 2017

A new report on Scotland’s National Walking and Cycling Network (NWCN) shows that 78% of users believe that the network of paths helps them increase their physical activity.

Over half (52%) stated that the existence of the NWCN allowed them to actively travel on foot or by bike rather than taking the car.

The research was carried out by Sustrans Research and Monitoring Unit in conjunction with Scottish Natural Heritage. It looked at patterns of use on the NWCN, the characteristics of users, their perceptions of the network and evidence on how the NWCN benefits local businesses.     An estimated 8.7 million walking and cycling trips were taken on the NWCN in 2016, and researchers believe that this could be a conservative estimate of usage. 87% of the walking trips and 67% of the cycling trips were taken for recreational purposes, generating an estimated £84.9 million of expenditure in the local economy.        More than half of local businesses responding to the survey anticipate the NWCN will lead to increased footfall, while 27% anticipate an extended operating season.     Mike Cantlay, Chair of Scottish Natural Heritage said: “By offering a better connected network of paths, we’ve seen huge returns in terms of health benefits across the nation and for local businesses who are experiencing greater trade, boosting the local economy.  Recreational trips alone generated a staggering £84.9 million of expenditure in 2016.     “The survey outcomes reflect our ambitious plans to continue to invest, extend and improve Scotland’s network of paths, trails and canal paths, as well as underlining the benefits of the investment that’s been made so far.   “The development of the network will ensure that more of Scotland’s population has better access to the outdoors for recreation and active travel, offering greater choice for users, contributing to better health and of course, enriching the environment.   “This is what we aimed to see when we put the NWCN forward as a national development in the National Planning Framework.”   John Lauder, Sustrans Scotland National Director said: “The NWCN is a hugely valuable resource for Scotland.  It is clear that awareness of its benefits to health and well-being are widely recognised among the public, with 78% of users saying it helps them increase their physical activity.     “Just over a week ago, we had the revelation from Public Health England that over 6 million middle-aged people in England don’t even spend as much as 10minutes doing a daily brisk walk.   We hope Scotland can be different.     “We look forward to working with our partners in Scottish Natural Heritage and Scottish Canals to build awareness of the NWCN.”

Sustrans nominated for prestigious Healthy Street proposal of the year 2017

25 August 2017
Children, the proposed design is tested using bails of hay , artist's impression of the new design

Sustrans, in partnership with London Borough of Lewisham (LBL), has had their recent Community Street Design for Rolt Street nominated for Healthy Street Proposal of the Year.

This award recognises the exceptional quality in street design that increases active travel choices, safety and liveability.

This ambitious scheme aims to create a safer environment to help the whole community make healthier travel choices. The scheme which was developed in partnership with Deptford Folk and the local community, anchored in Deptford’s Maritime history, addresses several issues including fast-moving traffic, poor visibility/sight lines, park guard railings and lack of safe crossing points.

Community-led street design

Directly responding to resident feedback, the council asked Sustrans, in their capacity as healthy street experts, to redesign the entrance to Folkestone Gardens from Woodpecker Road and Rolt Street.

Sustrans specialises in community led design: a process that involves local residents throughout, ensuring proposed designs meet the needs of local people. This approach means solutions are designed by the community, for the community, ensuring good fit and the long-term success of the project.

Sustrans ran a series of consultation events including outdoor pop-up events to get the community’s insight on what they wanted from the entrance to Folkestone Gardens. The majority of the community felt that the entrance was just not safe enough.

Sustrans urban designers, engineers and community facilitators collaborated with local people to put into practice what the community wanted to be changed, by testing their ideas. We narrowed the carriageway using hay bales and implemented calming traffic measures as part of our street trial event’.

The community really appreciated the trial, they quickly saw the benefits that the temporary measures brought, and wanted to see them made permanent. Our automatic traffic counts revealed a 20 mph reduction in mean speed on the street trial day compared to the rest of the week.

Rolt Street reimagined

Our community inspired design has reimagined Rolt Street as an extension of Folkestone Gardens, creating a better place for people to walk, cycle, play and stay. A one-way boulevard design will allow cars to pass through from Childers Street junction towards Trundleys Road with speeds set to 5pmh.

The whole design has been developed in connection with the maritime history of Deptford Dockyard in mind, with timber seating and corten steel used to create a gateway to the garden ground in the history of the local area. This community street design, made with and for local residents, could encourage future generations to make healthier travel decisions and enjoy a life with less pollution and traffic.

Mum's the word on cycling infrastructure

24 August 2017
Mums at Herbert Morrison School, Lambeth with bikes, Cyclists on Quietway 5 in London

We want to make walking and cycling easier, so we all have the choice to make journeys safely and conveniently on foot or by bike. We also know that overcoming barriers and adopting cycling and walking has enormous benefits for our health, our communities and our streets.

Introducing Quietways: Opening up London for anyone wanting to cycle at a gentler pace

Quietways are a new way to cycle in and around London using connected backstreets, parks and waterways to create secret passageways through the capital. They’re a fantastic way to enjoy getting about by bike at a gentle pace, as the routes are well marked with purple signs, so they’re easy to follow.

They’re also perfect for all abilities, ages and backgrounds, so they’re great for those new to cycling or those who regularly cycle but want to avoid busy or fast traffic. And more sections of the Quietways network are opening across the capital over the coming months and years.

Alongside our work helping Transport for London to deliver Quietways to help get more people out on their bikes, we also we also work with kids, parents and teachers across the capital.

It’s not only kids that benefit from training

We work with hundreds of schools, teachers and parents, across London on our “Bike It Plus” programme in schools. Funded by TfL, it helps to give entire communities around a school the confidence to change how they travel. And we recognise that parents set the tone for travel at home, so we run training just for them.

If you think cycling isn’t for you, our Mum’s group who’ve recently trained in Lambeth say it is!

Mums from South London who have been on our training programmes tell us that Quietways are essential in giving them quiet confidence.

With mums taking to two wheels for their everyday journeys, they’re also set to help change the travel habits of their children - unlocking a lifetime of enjoyable and healthy travel options for their families.

When behaviour change meets infrastructure improvements, big things can happen.

“Bike It You Can Too”: What parents think

“I knew how to ride a bike but I’ve never cycled on the road. I’m now cycling to work every day, I feel really lucky that I’ve met such lovely people during the programme. The trainers were so supportive.“

“The sessions have taught me how to cycle safely and have given me a huge boost of confidence when cycling on the roads. I’m looking forward to using cycling as a new form of exercise, commuting, going on family rides and encouraging my little girl to get on a bike.”

“At the start of the course all the parents had different cycling abilities. It’s been lovely how we’ve all supported one another and encouraged each other to continue training.“

“My young boys are so confident on a bike, I’m now able to keep up with them.”

“We absolutely love Quietways, the new routes are fantastic. We’re all excited to explore the network this Summer.“

What schools think

“The parents’ cycle course at Herbert Morrison Primary School has been a huge success, parents talk about the positive impact learning to ride has had on their lives; as well as raising their awareness of the benefits of sustainable travel on their health and the environment.

"The new Quiteway (Q5) cycle route, which parents experienced in one of their training sessions, is a welcome addition to the community to enable more young people to walk and cycle to school.

"Hosting the course has been an absolute pleasure. The trainers came well equipped which led to the smooth, non-invasive running of the course.” - Vanessa Bennett, Assistant Headteacher, Herbert Morrison Primary School.

What pupils think about their mums taking a cycling course

“It’s good because it’s been a long time since my mum rode a bike. I’m looking forward to riding with her.”

“She’s good, she’s getting better. I go riding with my mum now, I enjoy it and we laugh a lot when we’re riding.”

'Everybody Active Every Day’ report released

24 August 2017
seniors walking

Today, Public Health England has released their ‘Everybody Active Every Day’ report which shows that 4 out of 10 (41%) adults aged 40 to 60 in England walk less than 10 minutes continuously each month at a brisk pace.

Responding to the findings, Jason Torrance, England Policy Director at Sustrans, walking and cycling charity, said:

“The findings from “Everybody Active Every Day” is a much needed call to action for Government to prioritise investment in cycling and walking as part of wider support for Local Authorities who urgently need to put in place solutions to tackle the inactivity crisis.

“Increasing investment in cycling and walking that helps local authorities deliver the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy must be a priority for Government.

“Liveable neighbourhoods with proper cycling and walking infrastructure will enable people to embed walking and cycling into their everyday routine and help fight the physical inactivity epidemic this country currently faces.”

Men’s Shed get back on their bikes

23 August 2017
men on bikes,

Wise men are more often associated with riding camels…but in east Belfast they have been spotted riding red bikes.

The East Belfast Wise Men’s Shed, based at Connswater Shopping Centre, has been taking part in the Public Health Agency’s (PHA) new Community Active Travel Programme. Delivered by Sustrans, the programme is designed to encourage everyone across Belfast to walk and cycle more as part of everyday life.

Members of the East Belfast Wise Men’s shed, who are all aged 50+, have received their National Standard Cycling Skills training and certificates from Sustrans, and the group has also benefitted from a set of ‘red rider’ bikes supplied to help them get more active.

“ Physical activity is a great way to improve your health and wellbeing. ”

- David Tumilty, Health Improvement Manager, Public Health Agency

Mervyn Cleland from the Wise Men’s Shed was delighted with the impact. He said: “Sustrans programme has been great for us. It’s wonderful to see the men, some in their 80’s getting used to cycling again. Riding a bicycle is a skill that lasts a lifetime, which I think the men are proving by getting out on the red bikes and exploring their community.”

Presenting the certificates on behalf of Sustrans, Active Travel Officer, Tom O’Dowd said: “Working with the Wise Men’s Shed is a great pleasure for Sustrans. It is very encouraging to see people returning to cycling, especially after decades of not getting on a bike. Our work with the men demonstrates that people can be part of the growing trend in active travel in Belfast, regardless of age.”

David Tumilty, Health Improvement Manager at the PHA said: “Physical activity is a great way to improve your health and wellbeing. Not only does it reduce your risk of developing chronic conditions including heart disease, stroke, some forms of cancer and type 2 diabetes, it also increases energy levels, helps maintain a healthy weight and benefits your mental health, reducing stress and anxiety.

“This Community Active Travel Programme is a great way to help individuals get active and work towards the Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines of 150 minutes moderate intensity physical activity each week. For advice on getting more active, visit the PHA’s website www.choosetolivebetter.com which also has tips on setting targets and more ways to move more and move more often.”

Sustrans is delivering the Community Active Travel Programme over the next three years in partnership with communities from twelve Council wards across the city.
