In response to the Chancellor’s Autumn Budget announcement, Steve Brooks, Policy Director at Sustrans, the cycling and walking charity said:
“When it comes to spending on transport, prevention is always cheaper than the cure. But sadly this budget continues to lock Britain into a polluted, congested future which in the long-run will cost the country billions.
“With the Prime Minister’s earlier announcement of a continued freeze in fuel duty, coupled with today’s announcement of over £25bn for the next Road Investment Strategy, this budget will only lead to further congestion, air pollution and poor health.
“A road building programme to be funded by income from VED is particularly alarming at a time when climate experts call for a drastic reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions.
“The Chancellor has missed an opportunity to help towns and cities thrive and relieve some of long-term pressures on the NHS.
“An additional £680m for the Transforming Cities Fund is welcome but pales in comparison to investment in the road network.
“We urge the UK Government to rethink its approach to VED; ensure local authorities have appropriate funds to maintain existing roads for the safety of pedestrians and people who cycle; and start taking walking and cycling seriously and commit to 5% of the transport budget raising to 10% of the transport budget by 2025 being spent on active travel in the next Comprehensive Spending Review. This is the best way to ensure that people have the programs and infrastructure in place to be confident to get around by bike or by foot.”

We’ve recently launched an exciting community-led project to tackle social isolation and turn Birmingham streets into friendly environments for people.
Working in Castle Vale, Pype Hayes, Birches Green and parts of Bromford, Sustrans will work with the community to undertake an audit of the local street scene. This will help to identify issues which make travel and connectivity more difficult.
As the project progresses residents will be able to put forward their improvements to create an age-friendly environment. Ideas could include improved cycling and pedestrian facilities such as traffic calming, new or improved crossing points, more greenery or even benches so people walking can stop can take a rest. We’ll work with local communities to develop these ideas and trial them for a short period, in a low-cost way.
The evidence collected during the two-year project will be compiled and used to develop a community plan at the conclusion of the project in May 2020. This will contain a number of proposals for lasting change which could be implemented over a 5-10 year period.
We’re delivering this as part of the Ageing Better in Birmingham, a programme working to reduce isolation in the city through a grass-roots approach designed to empower and connect individuals, helping to create sustainable change in communities. Along with other projects across the city, it’s been commissioned by Birmingham Voluntary Services Council with a £6 million grant from the Big Lottery Fund.
Urban environments can have a huge impact on people’s health and wellbeing, influencing how active they are. So improving access for those aged 50 and over can help to improve their well-being by encouraging them to be more active and engaged with the community. In turn, this can help to overcome social isolation and loneliness.
Commenting on the project Sustrans Community Engagement Officer, Ridhi Kalaria, said:
“This exciting project is a community-led initiative which means that residents will be able to submit practically any idea they like! We’ve got no idea what they’ll put forward but we’re expecting to receive suggestions that’d make it easier to walk and cycle from A to B. In any case, it’ll be an exciting time and we want everyone to get involved and have their say!”

More than 60 Craigmillar residents and young people in Edinburgh took part in a spectacular glow parade and circus skills performance on 24 October 2018, as part of a series of workshops aimed at encouraging more people to walk and cycle.
Run by ThinkCircus and supported by Sustrans Scotland’s ArtRoots programme, which is funded by Scottish Government, the Circus of Lights procession travelled through Little France and ended at Innocent cycle path on National Cycle Network Route 1.
Children and parents were accompanied on the route by a giant unicorn and mermaid lanterns constructed by the kids themselves, with the parade ending in glowing hula hoop and sock poi performances.
Sustrans Scotland Artworks Project Officer, Cosmo Blake, said:
“Sustrans is pleased to have been able to support the workshops and parade through our ArtRoots fund.
“The Circus of Lights project has really brought the community in Craigmillar together over the last number of weeks.
“We hope the event will inspire more local people to engage with the possibilities of active travel and their local National Cycle Network routes in a new and dynamic way.”
Craigmillar resident, Sarah Baker, whose children Jasmine (6) and Aliza (3) attended the workshops and parade, added:
“All the girls have talked about over the last five weeks has been the workshops and the parade, and I have definitely noticed their confidence increasing week on week.
“It’s been great in keeping them active in a fun way and really encouraged them to explore the safe, open spaces on our doorstep.”
What is the Sustrans ArtRoots programme?The ArtRoots fund is a community fund for artistic and aesthetic improvements to the National Cycle Network in Scotland. ArtRoots supports local enterprise and culture, whilst also showcasing talent, intergenerational co-operation, expression and creating a platform for youngsters to be heard through their art.
As 2018 is the Year of Young People, the fund encourages applications that involve or engage with young people.
Community groups based in Scotland who would like to make artistic or aesthetic improvements along their local NCN route are being asked to fill in an online expression of interest form. The closing date for receipt of applications is Monday 5 November 2018 at 5.00pm.

Sustrans has backed a letter from ClientEarth and the British Lung Foundation, calling for the UK Government to fund and implement a Clean Air for Children Programme.
Rachel White, Senior Policy and Political Advisor at Sustrans, said:
“Urgent action is required to protect young children and future generations from the harmful effects of breathing in toxic air. Despite there being a growing body of evidence that highlights its detrimental impact on our health, simply not enough is being done to tackle the country’s air pollution crisis.
“Road transport is a huge contributor to the polluted air we breathe and there are one million more private vehicles on the road today compared with ten years ago. One of the best ways to improve air quality in the UK, is to reduce the number of motorised vehicles on the road and offer alternatives to private vehicle travel, such as walking and cycling.
“To do this, we need to redesign streets and public spaces for people, not cars; bring in traffic exclusion zones around schools, nurseries and playgrounds, and promote and enable walking, cycling and public transport as realistic options for journeys to and from schools.
“We’re calling on the UK Government to protect children, who are among the most susceptible to the negative effects of air pollution, and implement a National Clean Air for Children Programme.”

Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Primary celebrates being the first school in Crawley to achieve the Gold School Mark award as part of our active travel programme.
The School Mark award is a joint Sustrans and Crawley Borough Council initiative. It helps pave the way for schools to grow a culture of active travel by encouraging pupils to cycle, walk and scoot. We are currently working with 17 schools across the borough.
The special ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Crawley, Cllr Geraint Thomas and Cllr Peter Smith, as well as Sustrans staff.
The school has been working with us since April 2011 and have been working their way through the School Mark programme for the past four years. They achieved the Bronze award in 2015, Silver in 2016, and have now achieved Gold.
The school earned the award through the commitment made by the school’s Bike It champion, Mrs De Lange, and Head Teacher, Mr Melia.
The number of children arriving at school by cycling, walking or scooting has risenWorking together with a dedicated Sustrans Bike It officer the school gathered a wealth of evidence that is required to achieve this challenging award. This includes showing that, since working with us in 2011, the percentage of pupils arriving at school by car has dropped by nine per cent. The number of pupils arriving at school by cycling, walking or scooting has risen by six per cent.
Work towards the award is structured so that children are empowered to make the decision to cycle, scoot or walk to school and enjoy the benefits associated with it.
This includes a variety of educational and fun events such as monthly Bike It Breakfasts, bike skills workshops as well as a genuine commitment from the school to promoting cycling, scooting and walking both within the school policy and the wider community.
Cycling boosts health and friendshipsJames Cleeton, Sustrans England South Director said:
“I congratulate everyone involved in this marvellous achievement – the Gold School Mark award is an outstanding recognition of a school’s commitment to active travel by encouraging children, parents and the wider community to make the choice to walk, cycle or scoot.
“The health benefits of having a more active school community are well documented and broad-ranging.
“Incorporating physical activity in schools is not only good for our environment, but it is also a social activity that can help young people by boosting friendships and combating stress or loneliness.”
This award is well deservedCelebrations continued after the awards assembly. Our Bike It Officer, Pat, conducted a Dr Bike safety inspection at the school. We also held a static bike challenge where 3.3 miles were sprinted out by a group of Year Six children during break time. A Year Six pupil achieved the fastest speed of 32 mph and won himself a bike computer.
The school has further planned a BMX fun day and also a bicycle decoration day highlighting the importance of High Visibility in conjunction with Diwali and Fireworks.

“There is clearly a desire from people in the local community who want to choose to walk and cycle more and programmes like this one which encourages families to travel more actively can really help.”
