More than 60 Craigmillar residents and young people in Edinburgh took part in a spectacular glow parade and circus skills performance on 24 October 2018, as part of a series of workshops aimed at encouraging more people to walk and cycle.
Run by ThinkCircus and supported by Sustrans Scotland’s ArtRoots programme, which is funded by Scottish Government, the Circus of Lights procession travelled through Little France and ended at Innocent cycle path on National Cycle Network Route 1.
Children and parents were accompanied on the route by a giant unicorn and mermaid lanterns constructed by the kids themselves, with the parade ending in glowing hula hoop and sock poi performances.
Sustrans Scotland Artworks Project Officer, Cosmo Blake, said:
“Sustrans is pleased to have been able to support the workshops and parade through our ArtRoots fund.
“The Circus of Lights project has really brought the community in Craigmillar together over the last number of weeks.
“We hope the event will inspire more local people to engage with the possibilities of active travel and their local National Cycle Network routes in a new and dynamic way.”
Craigmillar resident, Sarah Baker, whose children Jasmine (6) and Aliza (3) attended the workshops and parade, added:
“All the girls have talked about over the last five weeks has been the workshops and the parade, and I have definitely noticed their confidence increasing week on week.
“It’s been great in keeping them active in a fun way and really encouraged them to explore the safe, open spaces on our doorstep.”
What is the Sustrans ArtRoots programme?The ArtRoots fund is a community fund for artistic and aesthetic improvements to the National Cycle Network in Scotland. ArtRoots supports local enterprise and culture, whilst also showcasing talent, intergenerational co-operation, expression and creating a platform for youngsters to be heard through their art.
As 2018 is the Year of Young People, the fund encourages applications that involve or engage with young people.
Community groups based in Scotland who would like to make artistic or aesthetic improvements along their local NCN route are being asked to fill in an online expression of interest form. The closing date for receipt of applications is Monday 5 November 2018 at 5.00pm.
