On the publication of the National Travel Survey for England (26 July), Xavier Brice, Chief Executive of walking and cycling charity Sustrans, said:
“It is disappointing to see the number of cycling trips have remained broadly static since 2002 and demonstrates that the government’s Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy is currently failing in its ambition to double cycling trips by 2025. It is encouraging however, to see a small increase in the distance travelled by bike overall and in the number of trips and distance walked.
“These results show the critical need to invest in cycling and walking infrastructure in our towns and cities to enable more people to walk and cycle for everyday journeys. On a day when Public Health England has released its extraordinary findings that one in 25 year six pupils are now classified as seriously obese, we need to do more to enable more children to walk and cycle the school journey.
“Building better cycling and walking infrastructure, coupled with targeted engagement programmes, is one of the best ways to do this as it enables children to travel on foot or by bike in safety and with confidence. Schools also need to utilise their newly doubled PE and School Sports Premium to help more children have an active journey and get the physical activity they need to lead healthy lives.”

We recently presented Fairfield Park Lower School near Stotford, Bedfordshire, with a trophy to celebrate success in this year’s Big Pedal competition. Fairfield Park finished ahead of over 1,600 schools throughout the country who took part in the competition between 23 April - 4 May.
The school recorded 3,460 active journeys during the two week challenge, with 81% of pupils choosing to scoot or cycle to school. Alister Barclay, our Schools Officer for Central Bedfordshire, presented the award during a special celebration assembly.
The Big Pedal is the biggest annual competition of its kind in the UK and its aim is to get more young people cycling and scooting to school. On each day of the challenge, schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling or scooting to school.
Thirty eight schools in Central Bedfordshire took part in the Big Pedal challenge this year, clocking up 90,000 active travel miles between them. Other schools that achieved a top 100 placing included Moggerhanger Lower School, Slip End Lower School, St Vincent’s Roman Catholic Primary School (Houghton Regis), Gothic Mede Lower School (Arlesley), Etonbury Academy (Arlesley), Priory Academy (Dunstable) and All Saint’s Academy (Dunstable).
Speaking after the presentation Alister Barclay said;
“The school and community always get behind this challenge and I’m really pleased that their efforts have been rewarded with this first place. The network of safe, off-road routes connecting Fairfield Park to Arlesey, Stotfold and Letchworth clearly supports pupils and their families, and would have a massive impact if replicated elsewhere.”
This year’s competition was backed by world record breaking cyclist Mark Beaumont and sponsored by Micro Scooters and Tonik. To mark the launch of the annual event we commissioned ICM to carry out a poll of children aged 6-15 around air quality issues. The survey found that a third (32%) of respondents in the East of England were worried about poor air quality. Almost one in three (32%) of those surveyed thought that encouraging more people to cycle, scoot or walk to school would be the best way to help to reduce levels of air pollution.

The National Cycle Network is set to be the stage this week for a Shakespearean theatre troupe travelling around Britain by bike.
The acclaimed HandleBards, who will travel through much of the Network’s 14,500 miles of routes on their energetic UK summer tour, will do two fun-packed comedy performances of famous Shakespeare’s plays on our Fallowfield Loop cycle path in Levenshulme, Manchester. An all-male cast of four will perform ‘Twelfth Night’ on 25 July while four women will present the company’s hilarious interpretation of 'Romeo & Juliet’ on 31 July.
HandleBards tour with all their set, props and costume by bike and will cycle around 1,500 miles, cycling from London to Edinburgh across the summer.
“We are over 700 miles into the tour and loving every minute of it” said actor Mark Collier who is cycling around the country as an actor in the HandleBards for the first time this year. “We’re having such an amazing adventure and the response we’re getting for the shows is great. We’ve performed in a lot of unusual places but this will be my first performance on a National Cycle Network cycle path. We travel along a few National Cycle Network routes as we cycle up the country and there are shows along the whole of our route, so if you don’t see us in Manchester you can catch us elsewhere as we slowly cycle up North.”
The Fallowfield Loop or ‘Floop’, as it’s affectionately known locally, is one of a small number of routes which we own and maintain as part of the National Cycle Network.
Rosslyn Colderley, the North England Director for Sustrans, the charity which owns the Fallowfield Loop said:
“It’s really fantastic to welcome back The Handlebards to Sustrans’ Fallowfield Loop cycle route in Manchester. Please dress for the weather and bring a picnic. If you’re not able to come to Manchester the troupes will be performing close to a cycle route near you.”
The Handlebards’ girls troupe tour the UK until 8 September, and the boys tour until 7 September. They will perform on Sustrans’ Fallowfield Loop (Crayfield Road entrance), in Levenshulme Manchester at 6.30pm on 25 July and 31 July. No ticket required, but please pay as much as you can to support the world’s first cycling theatre company.

A community action day was recently held on Saturday 14 July in Spon End, Coventry, aimed at improving the appearance of a local subway. Residents were given the chance to see how colourful lighting could be used to change the look and feel of the subway and there were art activities and the opportunity for passers-by to share their own subway design ideas too.
It’s was organised as part of the ‘Local People Spon End’ project which is a community led street design initiative which we’re delivering in the area. It was set up last year with the aim of enhancing public spaces and streets across the neighbourhood. Funded by the People’s Health Trust, it’s one of seven similar projects we’re delivering right across the country.
Over the last 12 months our project coordinators, Daryl Coulbourn and Chloe Booth have arranged a number of ‘pop up’ engagement events. At these sessions they listened to residents’ ideas and helped them to develop designs which could be trialled. The Spon Street subway was one of the locations identified through this process.
The subway is a very well used route, a 2017 count showed an average of more than 1,000 journeys were made through the subway into town, during weekday mornings alone. Targeted project engagement sessions have been held within the subway itself to talk to passers-by and find out their views about the subway. The ‘dull appearance’, poor perceptions of personal safety and cleanliness were top mentions during these sessions.
The subway received a thorough clean and partial painting by the City Council in 2017. However, work to clean the tiles is challenging because their age means they are now starting to degrade in places and come loose, so only gentle methods are appropriate.
As part of the engagement process a group of project participants took part in a street art tour in Bristol which enabled them to investigate some potential subway ‘make-over’ ideas – such as the coloured lighting scheme. Many people have expressed their appreciation of the original tiles within the subway – so the group has been keen to explore ideas which allow the character of the tiles to remain, such as changing the lighting in this way.
The lighting trial event marked the start of a series of design workshops over coming months, to develop more permanent design options for the subway. It follows two recent community clean-up days, where volunteers helped to get the subway looking as fresh and clean as possible in preparation.

We want to raise the profile of the work we’re doing with the subway because we understand that urban environments can have a huge impact on people’s health and wellbeing. Neighbourhoods that are pleasant, safe and sociable are often the happiest and healthiest places to live and work. The character and condition of our streets and public spaces can influence how physically active we are and how positive we feel about our local community overall.“
The project is open to anyone who has a connection with Spon End and organisers want more people to get involved.

Fagley Primary was the winning school in our 4th annual inter-schools cycling event in Bradford last week.
Children from five Bradford Primary schools got the chance to try out competitive cycling at the Richard Dunn Cycle Circuit in Bradford on 11 July. Allerton, Bowling Park, Fagley (3rd last year), Reevy Hill and St Josephs (winners last year) took part in an individual Time Trial, a sprint, relay, team time trial, handicapped and endurance races. Riders got points which went to an overall school score.
Fagley was the overall winner, while last year’s winners St Joseph’s put in some solid performances to place them firmly in the silver medal position and Reevy Hill took the Bronze position after a close final race with Bowling Park.
The event was supported by local club East Bradford Cycling Club, which loaned bikes and provided British Cycling qualified coaches to run cycle training between events. The team time trial was, just like the Tour de France, taken on the 5th team rider to cross the line. After some coaching each school rode as a team trying to be the quickest team to complete 2 laps.
Fagley Headteacher Chris Parfitt said:
“With the support of Sustrans we have really focused on developing and improving cycle skills for our children. In September we will have our very own cycle track in our school grounds. It’s all very exciting. Future Olympian cyclists in the making - how proud we’d be at Fagley Primary School to achieve that”
Ian Cullen Event Organiser and Sustrans Active Travel Officer for Bradford and Keighley said:
“The enthusiasm for friendly racing and cycling in general was very high from all participating schools. Some of the children did well in the shorter sprint event events, while others did well in the longer endurance type events. From this experience many of the children can now progress on to local cycling clubs to make cycling a regular part of their active lifestyle”.
