Big Pedal success in Leicester

Schools across the country have been taking part in the Big Pedal, our event aimed at getting more young people cycling and scooting to school. In Leicester 18 schools registered to take part in the challenge which took place between 23rd April and 4th May with promising results.

One of the schools which took part was Mellor Community Primary school. During the Big Pedal we recorded 1,238 journeys made by bicycle or scooter with 38.83% of pupils taking part. Overall, the school achieved an overall finish of 111th place nationally.

During the challenge, our team helped to deliver a range of activities for pupils and parents. This included a visit by the local PCSO team to do some bike marking and a maintenance workshop for parents. The activities received the backing of parents with one, who plans to continue cycling with his son, noting improvements in their child’s behaviour.

Work within Mellor is funded by the Choose How You Move Leicester City Council Access Fund and is part of the school run parking programme to reduce congestion at school run times.

Speaking about the success of the Big Pedal at the school Maryam Amatullah, our local Schools Cycling Officer, said:

“Mellor Community Primary has been absolutely amazing during the Big Pedal!! The whole school was buzzing with excitement and we couldn’t believe how many bikes and scooters we were seeing.

“At the start of the project bike counts were around 2 – 4 but on one day a whopping 272 bikes were recorded! Even the rain didn’t stop the children from riding their bikes and scooters to school! Also, I’d also like to thank our school champion at the school, Antony Hibble who got behind the Big Pedal straightaway and pushed the whole school to take part.

"He said children are continuing to ride and scoot even after the Big Pedal. I wish all my champions had Antony’s positive attitude and drive!”
