Responding to the publication of the Government’s draft Clean Air Strategy, Xavier Brice, CEO for Sustrans said:

“We welcome the more holistic approach presented in the Clean Air Strategy to address all sources of particulate pollution. However, the Government isn’t doing enough to tackle poor air quality from motor vehicles, which account for 80% of the pollution where legal limits are broken.

“The strategy, in particular, seems vague on solutions to tackle the problem of the pollution from braking and tyre systems.

“It is clear we need fewer not just newer vehicles on our roads.

“We want the UK Government to take meaningful action on road transport emissions by investing in high-quality cycling and walking infrastructure which allows families to cycle and walk to school and amenities with confidence so that it is the most obvious choice for shorter journeys.”
