Westminster City Council has issued a claim for Judicial Review of Cycle Superhighway 11 that could see the scheme stopped.
Responding to the news, Ben Addy, Head of Collaborative Design for Sustrans in London, said,
“Westminster Council’s decision to take the scheme to judicial review is deeply disappointing for hopes of safer cycling and walking in central London.
“The council appear to have made a decision based on unfounded fears rather than clear evidence.
“As demonstrated elsewhere in London, from Waltham Forest to the Embankment, improving streets for walking, cycling and buses, as is proposed on Superhighway 11, is the only way to improve air pollution and congestion by reducing vehicle numbers in the capital.”
Cycle Superhighway 11 will from Portland Place in the City of Westminster to Swiss Cottage through Regent’s Park.
The Superhighway received 60 per cent support in a public consultation that ran from February to March 2016.
The plans were first published for consultation by the previous Mayor and Cycling Commissioner with Transport for London and the London Borough of Camden and City of Westminster.

In Walthamstow, traffic has been reduced by 56 per cent following the closure a number of through-routes for traffic, while retaining vehicles access for residents and deliveries. Where Transport for London installed a Cycle Superhighway on the Embankment, five per cent more people are able to move along the corridor.
