Ysgol Llywelyn have become the third school in Denbighshire to receive an award for their effort in getting pupils travelling actively to school. They Silver School Mark Award was awarded for getting over 15% more students walking and cycling to and from school.
An active school run has many benefits for young people and schools, including increasing pupils’ levels of physical activity, helping to promote students’ physical and mental health and wellbeing, reducing the number of cars at the school gates and creating a better environment for the whole school community.
Our School Mark Award is a bespoke online tool which takes schools through the key steps required to increase and sustain the number of pupils travelling to school actively. Schools can use the tool to track progress and access a wealth of supporting resources to achieve the three levels of excellence.
Councillor Brian Jones, who is both the school’s local councillor and the Lead member for Highways, Planning and Sustainable Travel at Denbighshire County Council presented the award to congratulate children, parents and staff for their efforts in increasing pupils’ walking, scooting and cycling levels by transforming the school journey.
Councillor Jones said:
“I’m very proud to present this award to Ysgol Llywelyn.
“We all lead such busy lives, I know how much effort it takes for parents to walk their children to school or to get them to cycle there and I congratulate them and also the school for their efforts with this initiative.
“The enthusiasm from the pupils to move the project forward to reach the Gold award was palpable”.
The school saw an increase of 16% in active travel modes being used on the journey to school last year, and a 15.9% reduction in car journeys.
The school were awarded a School Mark award certificate and plaque for their efforts, and will inspire other schools in the area to take the steps needed to achieve Sustrans School Mark accreditation.
Mari Gaskell, Headteacher at Ysgol Llywelyn said:
“We’re thrilled to see more of our pupils travelling to school by bike, scooter and on foot. It’s an excellent way for young people to increase their daily physical activity levels and they arrive at the school alert and ready to take on the day. It has also helped to reduce traffic at the school gates, making it a safer environment for us all.”
Gwen Thomas, Sustrans schools officer for North Wales said;
“It is fantastic to see Ysgol Llywelyn doing so much to help kids travel confidently and safely.
“Walking, scooting, and cycling are good for students’ health, confidence and independence and it makes them better learners in the classroom too.
“We are also very grateful to Welsh Government for supporting our valuable work which has seen huge increases in the number of students travelling actively to school regularly.”
