Our Bike It team are celebrating a decade of success in Luton! A dedicated Bike It Officer has been operating continuously since 2007 and recent data has shown that more kids are choosing cycling and abandoning the car.
The data covering the 2015/16 period shows that one in five children who’d never cycled to school have got on their bikes and are pedalling towards a healthier lifestyle! The data shows that the number of children regularly cycling to school has increased by 6.8% and those skating or scooting has risen by 5.5%. It coincides with a 3.3% fall in the number of children being driven to school.
Funded by Luton Borough Council, the project aims to encourage parents, pupils and staff to ditch the car for school journeys in favour of active travel. In 2015/16, schools were able to choose which activities they’d like our Bike It officers to deliver from a menu. These activities included cycling and scooting skills, biker’s breakfasts, assemblies, competitions and curriculum based classroom work related to travel choices.
Our Bike It officers operate at locations around the country and have worked with half of the 50 schools in the Luton area - and we’re hoping to engage with more if funding continues.
Richard Noon, our Bike It officer in Luton, said:
“Our programme gives children the skills and confidence they need to choose active travel over the car. There’s much more we need to do but these figures show that we’re on the right track. This proves that with investment and the right support people will switch to healthier and more sustainable forms of transport.”
