We are celebrating with villagers in Rufforth this week since we opened a new cycle and walking route which links the village to an existing traffic-free path towards York.
Rufforth with Knapton Parish Council asked us to construct the new 400-metre section of path which connects to Moor Lane bridleway. Respected local resident Mrs Hilda Atkinson, who has lived in the village for 58 years cut the ribbon on the new route, which provides an important link to develop the National Cycle Network to the west of York.
Moor Lane bridleway towards York was improved and extended in 2014. The Parish Council now plans to connect it with Knapton using an underpass to avoid crossing the A1237 outer ring road.
Parish Councillor Helen Butterworth said:
“We’re absolutely thrilled that after all our prolonged efforts the village is finally linked with the existing Moor Lane bridleway so local residents and visitors don’t need to walk and cycle on the busy road.“
Rupert Douglas, Sustrans Network Development Manager in Yorkshire said:
“It’s been fantastic to work with local people in Rufforth and to create this latest important link to the National Cycle Network west of York. In the long term we hope to develop more paths so it will be possible for people from villages throughout the area to cycle into the city.”
The Rufforth path is funded by Yorventure and supported by City of York Council. In future the path will become part of the National Cycle Network.
