Highways England has teamed up with Sustrans, the walking and cycling charity, to deliver a £3 million boost to encourage more people to get on their bikes.
To help people cycling and walkers navigate its road network Highways England is working closely with Sustrans to help provide safer crossings and connect cycle schemes on England’s busiest roads with the charity’s 16,505 mile National Cycle Network.
Sustrans have identified a long list of opportunities and will be working together with Highways England to create a shortlist of schemes which can be quickly taken forward.
Anita Konrad, Sustrans National Director, England said:
“We are delighted to be partnering with Highways England and welcome this investment that will make it easier for more people to cycle to work, the shops and for leisure.
“Cycling and walking for local journeys is part of the solution to many of the challenges we face today, including road congestion, air pollution and high levels of inactivity. The schemes demonstrate how – with some practical design solutions and minimal interventions – we can address these challenges, and that retrofitting cycling provision can be done easily.
“We hope to build on this partnership with Highways England, to make cycling safer, more attractive and easier for everyone, regardless of age and abilities.”

The Department for Transport (DfT) today announced a review of the Highway Code to update guidance on how road users should behave around people on bikes and pedestrians.
Responding to the DfT’s announcement of a review of the Highway Code, Xavier Brice, Chief Executive, Sustrans, the cycling and walking charity said:
“We strongly welcome the Government’s review of the Highway Code to make our streets safer for walking and cycling. Sustrans has been calling for this in coalition with other cycling and walking organisations and it’s fantastic to see the Minister take this on board and show real leadership in this area.
“Close passing and car dooring endangers vulnerable road users and puts many people off cycling at a time when increased cycling and walking will help solve a range of issues such as obesity, congestion and air pollution and will create, more liveable, healthy neighbourhoods. Our streets should be safe places for people setting out on foot and we see too many pedestrians killed on our roads. The fact that the Government is looking to update guidance in the Highway Code in these areas is a significant step forward and should create real positive change for people walking and cycling.”
Sustrans, in coalition with other cycling and walking organisations, has been calling for five changes to make our roads safer for pedestrians and people on bikes. The remaining four are:
• Lower speeds – reducing default speed limits to 20pmh in residential areas and 40 mph on quiet rural roads.
• Adopt ‘best in class’ design standards to create safe attractive spaces for people walking and cycling.
• To prohibit pavement parking in England outside of London.
• To provide cycle training to all children during their primary and secondary school years.

We are delighted that Acomb Primary School has received the Modeshift STARS Gold award following our work with iTravel York to get more pupils cycling and walking on their journeys to school.
Modeshift STARS is the national awards scheme to recognise schools that demonstrate excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel.
Active travel eventsAcomb Primary now has 73% of children travelling to school on foot, scooter or bicycle. Many are recent converts, 17% of the pupils who were regularly driven to school have switched to walking, cycling or park and stride. The school runs regular active travel events such as bike breakfast, themed active travel days and park and stride promotions to encourage the whole school community to leave the car behind.
The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Keith Orrell, said:
“Being awarded the Gold level STARS Award show just how hard the staff, pupils and parents and carers at the school have worked, making ‘being active’ an intrinsic part of the school day.
“We all know how important it is to incorporate exercise into our lives and walking, cycling or scooting to school is a great way to make a positive start to the day.”
Erin Gray, our schools officer in York said:
“I’m so proud that Acomb Primary has won this award. They’ve worked incredibly hard to get more active on the school run and they really deserve to get this national recognition. Walking or cycling to school regularly gives children the exercise they need and also helps improve air quality and traffic congestion in York.”
Tom Dennis, class teacher and PE coordinator from Acomb Primary School, said:
“We are thrilled to be awarded the Gold level STARS Award for our efforts to increase safe and sustainable travel to school. It really recognises the hard work done not only by the school, but also by the parents and children themselves to embrace this change towards cycling, scooting and walking.”
Cycling links to curriculumSustrans currently works in 17 schools in York to encourage children, parents and teachers to look at the health and environmental impact of travelling by car and try walking or cycling to school. Children take part in activities which link to other areas of the curriculum from physical education, such as geography and maths.
In one activity children survey their streets to look at how improved design could make a safer and more attractive environment for walking and cycling. Five-minute walking zones were set up around some schools to encourage parents to ‘park and stride’ when they drop their children off to school, to improve safety and reduce air pollution around school entrances.
We have worked in over 40 schools in York since 2009, funded by City of York Council’s iTravel York programme.
